Orange Shirt Day: The Foundation will be at the Laval University on September 28-29-30

A Living History of Strength and Resilience

The month of September is a special time for all of us as we prepare to celebrate Orange Shirt Day and Truth and Reconciliation Day at Laval University. This day holds particular significance this year as it provides us with an opportunity to honor the past while celebrating the future, shedding light on the youth of First Nations.

Reconciliation in action

At Laval University, the community is actively engaged in the reconciliation process. This year, students, staff, and faculty will come together to participate in a series of activities under the theme of recognizing the cultures and knowledge of First Peoples, organized by the Circle of First Peoples at Laval University from September 28th to 30th at the Grand Axe of Laval University. On the agenda: dances, crafts, conferences, songs, performances, animations, the Fox Challenge with obstacles organized by the New Pathways Foundation, and much more!

On September 30th, in particular, a march will be organized by the New Pathways Foundation, offering everyone the opportunity to commemorate the past while walking towards the future, together.

The Story of Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day, created by Phyllis Webstad, pays tribute to Indigenous children from residential schools by encouraging the wearing of orange shirts for commemoration and awareness. It is also a day to acknowledge the path towards reconciliation and the respect for the culture and knowledge of First Nations. We invite you to wear an orange shirt for these festivities. Orange shirts will also be available for sale on-site by the Justice and Indigenous Issues Committee of the Faculty of Law at Laval University. All profit goes back to the New Pathway Foundation to support its mission.

Join us for these three days to celebrate our future: the youth of First Nations and the knowledge and culture of First Peoples. It is an opportunity to recognize our past, honor our elders, and celebrate a future where reconciliation is possible. Together, we can contribute to building a more just and equitable world for all.
